Yuji Hu Obituary-Death News; Calgary Father Yuji Hu Dies Saving Daughter at Garrapata Beach, California

The tragic death of Yuji Hu, a 39-year-old father from Calgary, Alberta, Canada, has left a family and two countries grieving after a heartbreaking incident along California’s rugged Big Sur coastline. Hu died on Friday, November 14, 2025, after being swept into the Pacific Ocean by a powerful wave at Garrapata State Beach, a scenic but notoriously dangerous stretch of shoreline south of Carmel. The incident unfolded during what authorities described as extremely hazardous surf conditions, with waves reaching an estimated 15 to 20 feet.

According to reports, Hu entered the turbulent water after witnessing his daughter being pulled off the shoreline by the massive surf. Displaying a father’s instinctive courage, he rushed into the ocean in an attempt to save her. Despite the dangerous conditions, he fought against the current to reach her as both were carried farther away from shore. The child’s mother also entered the water in a desperate effort to help but managed to return to land safely despite the strong waves.

Witnesses on the beach quickly reacted as the emergency unfolded. A visitor, alongside an off-duty California State Parks peace officer, managed to pull Hu from the water. They immediately began performing CPR while awaiting emergency responders. Hu was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased. Officials noted the rapid response and courageous efforts of bystanders, though the force of the ocean proved too overwhelming.

The mother, who endured the frigid waters while trying to help her family, was taken to the hospital and treated for mild hypothermia. She was reported to be in stable condition. A younger sibling, the family’s 2-year-old child, remained unharmed during the ordeal, providing a small measure of relief amid the devastating circumstances.

The search for Hu’s daughter, first reported as 5 years old but later clarified by the family to be 7 years old, continued for two days as divers, rescue teams, and coastal authorities combed the area. On Sunday, November 16, 2025, a diver located her body approximately 100 yards offshore, bringing the harrowing search to an end.

The incident has renewed attention to the treacherous conditions that can occur at Garrapata State Beach, an area admired for its beauty but known for powerful surf, steep drop-offs, and unpredictable waves. Officials frequently warn visitors about the dangers of so-called “sneaker waves,” which can appear suddenly and with enough force to knock adults and children off their feet.

Friends, family, and community members in both Canada and the United States have expressed deep sorrow over the loss of Hu and his daughter. Many have described his final act as a testament to his devotion as a father. The tragedy stands as a heartbreaking reminder of the ocean’s strength and the risks posed by the California coast during periods of heavy surf.
