The Saratoga Corinth & Hudson Railway family is deeply saddened to announce the sudden passing of Walter “Chip” Ordway, our cherished Stationmaster, who died peacefully over the weekend while doing something he loved—chasing trains. Chip had been visiting the Conway Scenic Railroad, a place that held special meaning for him as it was both one of his favorite destinations and the final resting place of his parents.

Chip’s unexpected passing has left an irreplaceable void in the hearts of his family, friends, and the entire SC&H community. From the very beginning, Chip was there every step of the way as the Saratoga Corinth & Hudson Railway took shape. He brought not only his passion for railroading but also his unmatched generosity, often showing up with old lanterns, vintage D&H crossing gate parts, unique odds and ends, treasured video clips, a warm cup of coffee, and, above all, steadfast moral support.
Known for his deep appreciation of history, Chip had a love for old audio and video equipment, radio broadcasting, and vintage film cameras. He preserved the past while celebrating the present, and he inspired all of us with his enthusiasm and dedication.
When SC&H first opened in May 2022, Chip immediately embraced the opportunity to make our very first boarding announcement at the station. His warm, welcoming voice became part of the fabric of the railway experience. For those who ride with us in the future, we encourage you to listen closely—you’ll hear Chip’s voice in every announcement and feel his presence in every journey. His spirit will forever be a part of our railway family.
Chip was more than a colleague or volunteer—he was family. His kindness, humor, and unwavering support enriched the lives of all who knew him. He will be remembered not only for his love of trains but also for the friendships he built and the joy he shared so freely.
The SC&H family invites friends, passengers, and community members to share photos, stories, and memories of Chip as we honor his remarkable life. Details regarding his memorial service will be shared once arrangements are finalized.
Thank you, Chip, for being our friend and for giving us the privilege of being yours. You were a cornerstone of our journey, and we will carry your memory with us always.
