The Pittsfield community is mourning the tragic loss of 56-year-old Rae Hartford of Scarborough, who died in a devastating single-vehicle crash on I-95 northbound early Monday morning, November 17, 2025. The Maine State Police (MSP) responded to the scene at approximately 5:55 a.m., discovering the vehicle lodged in the trees after veering into the median.

According to authorities, Rae Hartford was driving a 2012 Subaru Impreza when the vehicle left the roadway, ultimately becoming trapped in the trees. First responders had to extricate her from the vehicle, but tragically, she was pronounced deceased at the scene. The crash prompted the closure of Lane 1 for approximately two hours while investigators and emergency personnel worked to clear the roadway and examine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Preliminary investigation suggests that speed and intoxication may have been contributing factors in the crash, though MSP emphasizes that the investigation remains ongoing.
