Maria Aguilar Velasquez Obituary: In loving memory of North Charleston woman killed in Bonneau crash

BONNEAU, S.C. – The South Carolina Highway Patrol has released new information regarding a fatal crash in Bonneau on Thursday afternoon that claimed the life of a North Charleston woman.

Master Trooper Frank Virzi said the collision occurred around 2:55 p.m. on Calestown Road near Gumville Road.

According to troopers and the coroner’s office, Maria E. Aguilar Velasquez, 37, was an unrestrained backseat passenger in a 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee when the vehicle ran off the right side of the roadway and struck a tree. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Jeep was transported to a local hospital with injuries sustained in the crash.

Berkeley County Coroner Darnell Hartwell confirmed his office was notified shortly before 3:10 p.m. of the fatality.

Multiple agencies responded, including the Berkeley County Coroner’s Office, Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office, Berkeley County EMS, North Fire and Rescue, and the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The incident remains under investigation by the coroner’s office and highway patrol.
