INDIANAPOLIS — One person was killed early Tuesday morning following a serious crash on the southwest side of Indianapolis, according to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD). The collision, which involved a Chevrolet Camaro, occurred in the 4200 block of South Harding Street, just north of the I-465 and I-69 interchange.

Authorities said officers and firefighters were dispatched shortly after daybreak after receiving reports of an accident with injuries. Indianapolis Fire Department crews also responded to the scene to assist with emergency aid and traffic control. Shortly after their arrival, the run was officially updated to an “accident fatal,” confirming that at least one individual had died as a result of the crash.
As of Tuesday morning, investigators had not yet determined how many vehicles were involved or whether additional victims were injured. IMPD has not released the identity of the person who died, and it remains unclear what circumstances led up to the collision.
Traffic conditions in the area quickly worsened as the investigation unfolded. Traffic maps showed significant backups along both northbound and southbound lanes of Harding Street, causing delays for morning commuters. Drivers traveling through the corridor experienced extended congestion while first responders worked at the scene.
IMPD later announced that Harding Street would remain closed between Hanna Avenue and I-465 while crash investigators continued their work. The closure was expected to last several hours, prompting officials to urge motorists to seek alternate routes and avoid the area if possible.
The investigation remains active, and police have not yet released additional details regarding the cause of the crash. Updates are expected as more information becomes available.
