TAMPA, FL — Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back Doug Martin, a two-time Pro Bowl selection and one of the franchise’s most dynamic offensive players of the 2010s, has died at the age of 36, his family confirmed on Saturday.

“It is with great sadness to inform you all that Doug Martin passed away Saturday morning,” the Martin family said in a statement, according to Fox Sports and The Tampa Bay Times. “Cause of death is currently unconfirmed. Please respect our privacy at this time.”
Martin, affectionately known to fans for his fierce running style and breakout rookie season, was drafted 31st overall by the Buccaneers in the 2012 NFL Draft out of Boise State University. He made an immediate impact, producing 1,926 yards from scrimmage as a rookie — the third-most ever by a first-year player in league history, behind only Hall of Famers Eric Dickerson and Edgerrin James.
After a pair of injury-plagued seasons, Martin returned to elite form in 2015, finishing second in the NFL in rushing with 1,402 yards. His standout performance earned him First-Team All-Pro honors and a second Pro Bowl selection, cementing his place as one of the premier backs in the league at the time.
The Buccaneers rewarded Martin with a five-year, $35.75 million contract extension the following offseason. However, his production declined sharply, as injuries and inconsistency limited him to fewer than 450 rushing yards in each of the next two seasons. Tampa Bay released him in 2018.
Martin later joined the Oakland Raiders, where he briefly revived his career in 2018 after stepping in for an injured Marshawn Lynch. He started nine games and rushed for 723 yards, but a subsequent injury the following year led to his release. He would not return to the NFL afterward.
Standing 5-foot-9 and weighing 223 pounds, Martin’s compact, powerful build and explosive running style earned him the nickname “Muscle Hamster,” though he was never fond of it. “The name ‘Muscle Hamster’ is the worst nickname possibly ever given to somebody,” Martin told USA TODAY Sports in 2015. “I hope it changes, and I hope that I play to a level where my nickname changes. That’s what my goals are.”
Despite his objections, fans embraced Martin’s personality and grit both on and off the field. He remained a beloved figure in Tampa Bay, where he was honored as one of the Top 50 Buccaneers of all time for his record-setting performances and leadership during his six seasons with the team.
In a statement Sunday, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers expressed their grief over his passing:
“We are deeply saddened to learn of the sudden and unexpected passing of Doug Martin. From his record-setting rookie season in 2012 to his multiple Pro Bowl selections during his six seasons as a Buccaneer, Doug made a lasting impact on our franchise. He was a fan favorite during his time in Tampa Bay and was honored as one of the Top 50 Buccaneers of all time for his numerous achievements. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and everyone whom Doug touched throughout his life.”
Former teammates, coaches, and fans have taken to social media to share their condolences and memories of Martin, many recalling his quiet determination, professionalism, and explosive performances that defined his time in the NFL.
Doug Martin’s impact extended beyond football — remembered by those close to him as a humble, hardworking, and family-oriented man who gave everything he had, both on the field and in life.
Funeral and memorial arrangements have not yet been announced as the Martin family requests privacy during this difficult time.
