Aljon Salvador Aguelo and Maricel Nano Aquino Obituary-Death News; Durham Couple Killed in Wilkes County Crash; Community Mourns Their Loss

The community is mourning a heartbreaking tragedy following a fatal collision in Wilkes County that claimed the lives of 34-year-old Aljon Salvador Aguelo and 35-year-old Maricel Nano Aquino, a beloved couple from Durham. The accident occurred on Monday morning, November 17, 2025, leaving family, friends, and neighbors devastated as they come to terms with the sudden and profound loss of two cherished lives.

According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, the crash happened around 8:00 a.m. at the rural intersection of Somers Road and Hunting Creek Road in Ronda, N.C. Aljon was driving a westbound 2024 Toyota RAV4 when their vehicle entered the intersection and was struck by a northbound 2006 Western Star tractor-trailer. The impact was severe, and both Aljon and Maricel tragically succumbed to their injuries at the scene. Authorities confirmed that Maricel was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision.

In the midst of this devastating loss, there is a small measure of hope: the couple’s two infant children, who were in the vehicle at the time, survived. Both were transported by ambulance to Brenner Children’s Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Though they face a long road ahead, their survival offers a glimmer of comfort to loved ones grappling with heartbreak.

The tractor-trailer driver, Blake Arden Graham, was uninjured in the crash. Investigators found no signs of speeding or impairment, and no charges will be filed. Somers Road remained closed for approximately three hours as officials examined the scene and gathered information to understand the chain of events.

Aljon and Maricel were more than the victims of a tragic accident—they were vibrant, loving individuals whose presence enriched the lives of many. As a couple, they were known for their dedication to their family, their resilience, and the warmth they extended to everyone they encountered. Whether through their work, their friendships, or their roles as parents, they made a lasting impact on those around them.

Aljon Salvador Aguelo, 34, is remembered as a devoted father, a hardworking provider, and someone who faced life with determination and loyalty. He carried himself with quiet strength and was committed to giving his family the very best. His gentle spirit, kindness, and reliability left a mark on all who knew him.

Maricel Nano Aquino, 35, brought joy and compassion into every space she entered. Known for her nurturing heart and loving nature, she was a pillar of comfort to her family and friends. Maricel’s smile had a way of warming even the hardest days, and her love for her children was immeasurable.

Their passing leaves a hole that cannot be filled, especially for their young children who now face life without the guidance and love of their parents. The road ahead will be difficult, but the community has already begun rallying around them, determined to ensure they grow up surrounded by support, affection, and remembrance of the incredible people their parents were.

As the investigation concludes, the true focus shifts to honoring the lives cut tragically short and offering comfort to those left behind. The loss of Aljon and Maricel serves as a painful reminder of life’s fragility and the importance of cherishing every moment with the ones we love.

We extend our deepest condolences to the Aguelo–Aquino family and all who are mourning this profound loss. May the memories of Aljon and Maricel bring strength in the difficult days ahead, and may their legacy of love continue to shine through the family and community they leave behind.

Rest in peace, Aljon and Maricel. Your lives, love, and spirits will never be forgotten.
